Exhibition Text

Los Angeles, CA 2022. Rohr is the accumulation of new vantage points for Illya Goldman Gubin. These Rohr segments can be seen as components for furthering interplay of utilitarian arrangement. A stirring gesticulation of the Downtown Los Angeles Landscape, Illya has manifested Rohr as a reflection on the binaries of industry and material development. These components Rohr are modular in nature and their inherent compulsions are designed to be mixed and matched. Confronted with the understood methods of production, Illya introduces new ways of thinking and joining otherwise disconnected objects. In place of welding, Illya has rather considered how else could the soft and the hard be secured together. The created meets the manufactured and questions how it came to be. Using his signature resin and fibreglass technique, Illya has chosen to contort its utility now to act as a binding agent to create structurally sound combinations of tubes. The soft material is contrasting the inner solidity of the tubes. Once alluding to the mobility of fluids and transportation of material, the tubes are now captured and frozen in space. Held with the very material which seemingly sits atop it, Rohr is an experiment in the duality of the banal. The combinations themselves create a new dialogue.
